THE BEDFORDSHIRE GARDENER
Visiting from village to village with the Gospel, I came upon a cottage with a pretty garden in front, which I entered, offering the couple a Gospel book, which ws thankfully received.
The old gardener and his wife, who lived there, had been, as they told me, "good" all their days.
It transpired in the course of our conversation that the gardener and his wife were expecting some "manifestation" to inform them of their salvation.
I told them that I was happy in the knowledge of my sins forgiven, Ephesians 1: 17, and of having eternal life as a present possession.
1 John 5: 13 and yet I had never had any such "manifestation" but had simply believed on God's Word, resting on what He says.
The aged gardener seemed astounded. He never heard of anyone being so saved. I got my Bible and read Isaiah 53: 5,6. "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
John 3: 16 "For Gos so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish blult have everlasting life." John 5: 24 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting live, and shall not come into condemnation but is passed from death unto life." and other passages where salvation is shown to be entirely through Christ's death, and assurance of it by believing God's Word. The old man rose up and clasping his hands said, "God be praised for sending His Gospel to us this day. I never saw it so plain before."
I called the following week and found them both saved and rejoicing in Christ, and able to testify to the fact. 2 Corinthians 5: 17 "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature, old things are passed away; behold all things are become new."
Let me ask you dear reader, "Do you know of passing from death unto life?" John 5: 24, of being born again? John 3: 3 "Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
